NVQ in Occupational Health and Safety Practice Level 4
NVQ in Occupational Health and Safety Level 3
This NVQ is designed to reflect the work of candidates with health and safety
responsibilities.
It will be appropriate for candidates who are working in the area of general health and
safety practice.
All such practitioners are involved in the assessment of risks, the identification of hazards
and determining strategies for control. There are a number of skills that they would all
need and use, such as:
- raising awareness about health and safety within the organisation
- using information to promote good practice
- maintaining and enhancing health and safety systems
- promoting good relationships to enhance health and safety practice
The aim of the overall qualification is to assess the candidate's ability to:
- ensure their own actions reduce risks to health and safety
- monitor procedures to control risks to health and safety
- develop procedures to control risks to health and safety
- promote a health and safety culture within the workplace
- investigate and evaluate incidents and complaints in the workplace
- conduct an assessment of risks in the workplace
- ensure their own actions aim to protect the environment
- review health and safety procedures in workplaces

NVQ in Occupational Health and Safety Practice Level 4
These NVQs are designed to reflect the work of candidates with health and safety responsibilities. The NVQs will be appropriate for candidates who are working in the area of general health and safety practice or managing the health and safety function.
All such practitioners are involved in the assessment of risks, the identification of hazards and determining strategies for control.
There are a number of skills that they would all need and use, such as:
- raising awareness about health and safety within the organisation
- using information to promote good practice
- maintaining and enhancing health and safety systems
- promoting good relationships to enhance health and safety practice
They may be managers or supervisors who have a specific responsibility for health and safety or they may be newly appointed safety advisers or professionals.
The aim of the overall qualification is to assess the candidate’s ability to:
- evaluate and develop their own practice
- promote a positive health and safety culture
- develop and implement the health and safety policy
- develop and implement effective communication systems for health and safety
information
- develop and maintain individual and organisational competence in health and
safety matters
- identify and evaluate health and safety hazards
- determine, assess and implement health and safety risk control measures
· develop and implement active and reactive monitoring systems for health and
safety
- develop and implement health and safety emergency response systems and
procedures
- develop and implement health and safety review and audit systems
· contribute to health and safety legal actions (additional)
· influence and keep pace with improvements in health and safety practice
(additional)
- manage the use of financial resources (additional)
- develop and implement systems and procedures to minimise environmental
impact of the organisation (additional)
